"Ed Greenwood" and "intimate" should never never NEVER be used in the same sentance.

Well, now inquiring minds want to know WHY you'd say that...

I could tell you...

Its because he smells "off"...

;) Just kidding!

Seriously, he's the king of bad D&D flavor. Starting with his "Sucked in Cheeks of the Hells" mag article and rounding out with "Ecologies" and "Realms".

Plus, factor in that tone of his voice from hearing his audio interviews he doesn't seem to be the same woolly, jolly type fellow of the photographs at all and thats just putting it mildly.

Do really want to try to evoke some kind of fantasy atmosphere successfully (cheering, etc.) around "Mr D&D" the whole time dreading that he might decide to spontaneously "sit in and slum with the fans" in your game playing "Criizl Fzymbryl" who has a three hour long personal relationship history to recite?

;)

You obviously don't know Ed's reputation. I don't have the links, but I'm sure someone here will hop in with them soon enough. Dude rolled a natural 18 for creepiness.

No I don't, that's why I asked. His articles were always so informative, from memory and recent reading.

Start here, follow various links. Condensed version: 1) he apparently acts all creepy and pervy around female fans at cons; 2) there's apparently a lot of pervy sex-fantasy stuff in "his" Forgotten Realms that was whitewashed out of the official TSR version.

So he's the epitome of the caricature of "gamer geek" that most of us have been trying to shake off for decades? Is that what you're saying?

:(
I liked some of his work and I still dig the Realms more than Greyhawk, but that's largely because I was first introduced to Greyhawk post-2e.

ETA: Lots of sanitization would make a lot of sense given how sterile The Realms feel in publication. I'm not looking forward to the posthumous publication of those campaign notes, nosireebob.

That is one weird site; the Marion Zimmer Bradley rumour disturbed me way more than the Ed Greenwood stuff, though. I watched an interview with him on YouTube and he did not seem like a particularly bad guy to me, just a bit of a social misfit and corporate mouthpiece. I have heard that his own unedited fiction is pretty much D&D Mills & Boon, with Elminster (some would say his alter ego) as the main protagonist.

That said, the way he pronounces "paladin" makes me want to smack him in the mouth. :D

Where were all these people 7 years ago when Dragonsfoot was deleting my squeaky clean jokes that was implying Greenwood was a creep?

Now its common knowledge? I can't win!

In all fairness, I'm pretty sure you still couldn't get away with posting that link at DF. There's a pretty strong contingent of "celebrity ass-kissers" ruling the roost over there.

I've read Spellfire and Crown of Fire by Ed Greenwood at some point, and they were plenty full of the kind of frequent, casual, multi-partner, all-friends-are-friends-with-benefits sex that otherwise is only found in porn. I dunno, maybe this WAS the censored version, but I definitely got the picture. Kinky fantasies of a lonely old man.

Back on topic, the con.

I don't know. I really had my bubble burst. I woke up out of a haze and it was like a "surprise roll", act now or you're finished.

;)

What other options are there?

There aren't any.

Why should I run from "an encounter" anyway? My "hit dice" is by far superior! ;)

Seriously, its either this or GenCon and whats the point of going to GenCon?

There is no point. Thats like kids and weirdos with "popping spin toys" now to supplement their animay cards. Why the hell would I want to go to that?

So I'm going but I don't know about running anything "on the radar".

Are you talking about GaryCon in 2010? If so, I'd love to come, Lake Geneva is a 60 min trip. Having raced at Lake Geneva Raceway for a few years, I got really good at finding the winding backways into LG, and the trip became fast.

When will it be for 2010?

Yeah, I don't know when it is but they're definitely having one.

I felt like I wasted the whole trip the last con that I went to (LGGC 2006) by just standing around or wasting energy. This time around I thought I could do something more constructive to establish a new base or tradition but that doesn't seem possible now.
