All quiet on the K&KA front

Post by Wheggi »

I know that I've been laying low on posting recently because I've been busy coming up with ways to kill Foster's character, but it seems like traffic on the board has been really light. What has everyone been up to? Any projects or gaming activity to report?

Ditto Algolei.

Preparing a 2E Gamma World campaign for the new years... with novice players (novice at GW, anyway... experienced 2E AD&D & CT players)... and I haven't done GW since 1988!

It's been so long since I played Gamma World that I'm not sure we played it right! But it was so much fun it didn't really matter. There was a similar game, called Droids, that was all about robots - did anyone play that? I played it once, I wish I had the rules - they were much better than Traveller's Book 8!

I've been working on the OSRIC wiki (though I'm not the only person working on it). It's a big job and it's been sucking up most of my spare time.

Well

I havent RP'd in a long time except for the playtests for S&W a while back. I have about hung up my RPing boots. Mostly I have been keeping busy playing board war games either solo or via vassal. I have been re-fighting the battle of the Ia Drang Valley, 1965 USA 1/7th AirCav vs. 9/66th PAVN-NVA and Hamburger Hill (Dong Ap Bai), 1969 USA 101st Abn vs. 29th Inf PAVN-NVA the most often since my latest game acquisitions have been about those battles.

However I haven't completely tossed out my RPG boots. I am currently working on a new game system involving modern day (1960-Present) squad level combat that can be played as an RPG on its own, or a miniatures game on its own, or a combination thereof.

This was tried back in the 80's by a number of companies and especially by an excellent little game - but it never was fully devloped. Then it was bought and the miniature parts were expelled and the focus went strictly into the RPG side. It like the others went no where as well. (I think Twilight2000 was the only one that really showed any staying power)

I think now though, with the direction WOTC has went with "D&D" and with the new popularity of the new Axis and Allies Miniatures lines, as well as Flames of War. I think the time is right to try this puppy again.

I know since I have posted this here, someone may jump on the wagon and end up leaving me in the dust since I admit to not being a speedy developer but at this point I am not worried about such things. I am mainly doing this for fun and if I can get it published and the contact I have in Taiwan can get me the minis - cheap - then we might have something.

Otherwise it will still be a fun exercise in game development.

TRAVELLER INFLUENCE: "No other rpg except D&D has influenced current gaming more than Classic Traveller." - Kellri

GROGNARD GEARHEADS:"Building anything for Traveller is a blast. Just make sure you've got a spreadsheet and a college education. Traveller is built for REAL MEN. There's none of that freeform prose for pussies you'll see in other games." - Kellri

THE DUNGEON GESTALT - D&D is primal fetishism. It makes relics out of old character sheets and totems out of a stack of hardback rulebooks. The dungeon crawl itself is a ritual with no obligation to make sense beyond the circle of participants. In that sense, it's a lot like a cave painting of some ancient hunt. It's a convergence of random events in a controlled setting that forms the basis of a heroic tale in the minds of the participants. Powerful and primitive social magic that can't be reliably explained but only experienced. And IMO, a much more 'real' experience than the forced plot you see in most 'storyteller' games. - Kellri

GAMING-Back To The Basics:"It was a helluva romp in the 70s. The choices were D&D in the white box, Traveller in the black box, or if we wanted something really bizarre, Empire of the Petal Throne in the colourful box! ...You know... it's stunning. Between them, those three games cover so much ground, everything since has been footnotes and elaborations." - pyratejohn

I'm at the end of my school year and hip deep in final exams and student reports. Lately I've just been too burnt out to write about rpgs every day and have been watching a lot of conspiracy theory videos about Mars and the moon.

Hey Wheggi, when are you going to start the Polynesian stuff up again??

Trent: Understand that my dungeon is going to be your new dad. You know, the stern disciplinary one with the horn-rimmed glasses, over-starched short sleeves and leather strap in hand. Like a cross between Hugh Beaumont and Michael Douglas in Falling Down.

Kellri: I'll be revisiting Kupuna Moku as soon as I get comfortably ahead in my home game design. Once I get enough breathing space then I'll be able to get back to the islands. 8)

JRMapes: I recall some good times with Recon and T:2000, and from what I've seen FoW has hit the marketing "sweet spot" about as nearly as any offering of its ilk. D&D and its cousins have so eclipsed that aspect of the hobby that (perhaps paradoxically) I don't think we're going to run out of room for new developments any time soon.

I have been working on some art for an upcoming OSRIC module. I think I'm also on the verge of getting a gaming group together for the first time in three years.

Christmas. Getting ready to move after the 1st of the year. Layout for Knockspell #1. Preparing for a BtMoM campaign (the amount of prep work on this, to do it right, is incredible)

DM'ing a Saturday AD&D game. Just started a Wilderlands campaign, and somehow Castle Zagyg found its way there right on the River Stilling. We'll see how it goes. Also jumped in to an online game of Encounter Critical which so far is a hoot.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.

Cheers.

Still playing in tacojohn's Wilderlands game about every other week, and I'll be DMing some folks in South Jersey/Philly area through RJK's Bottle City next week.

I've been doing a bit of writing and researching lately (mostly GH though not all), and with tacojohn starting to slide into evil tax season, I've been giving some more thought to DMing in my version of Castle Greyhawk, to help supplement times that he'll be unavailable to DM over the next 4-5 months.

I've also got a few publishing project in the hopper: an article that'll appear in KnockSpell #1, among other things.

Please, please do!

There is lots of room for islands in any campaign!
