Knights & Knaves Alehouse

Over at Enworld the past few months I've noticed a slowdown in traffic so i poked about on the web and sure enough traffic there is down but some other gaming sites have higher traffic.

according to Alexa.com in the past 3 months the internet reach of the following sites-

enworld.org down 42%
wizards.com down 43%
dragonsfoot.org up 5%
knights-n-knaves.com up 28%
trolllord.com down 61%
mongoosepublishing.com down 9%

Now that is fascinating. What does trolllords concentrate on? Which edition I mean.

Troll Lord formerly concentrated on d20 (3.0/3.5), Lejendary Adventure (Gary Gygax's last system), and Castles & Crusades/SIEGE Engine (their own proprietary d20-based "rules-lite"/"retro-appeal" system). They've recently lost two of those (d20 because WotC switched over to 4E and Troll Lord decided not to follow; LA because Gygax's estate canceled their license and switched to a different publisher (Mongoose)) and now have all their eggs in the C&C/SIEGE basket, so it's no surprise they'd see some decrease in traffic, but that sharp a decline is surprising. Perhaps it's less a decline than a return to normalcy from a peak in the prior period (around the big news at GenCon of both the LA license being pulled and the first volume of Castle Zagyg finally being released after a several-year delay)?

I should point out I couldn't check trollords web forums because they are hosted by another company and the traffic monitor i was using doesn't go down that low in a hierarchy, so they may have roaring traffic on their forums and not have many people clicking over to the .com site except for ordering stuff.

Perhaps because of the US economic slide-into-the-toilet? Less/no more disposable income, therefore crashing hobby sales.

Or perhaps more people are just fed up with the 3.x/4.x nonsense and are converting to our Dark Side of the Force! Mwa-ha-ha-ha!!!

I think TLG switched their provider or address at some point in recent history, too. I would think that although the Gail Gygax IP-yoink is going to hurt TLG in the long run, in the short run I'd think it would DRIVE traffic there either to buy up stuff before it's gone -- or just because people have a tendency to gawk at traffic accidents. I'm betting whatever they did with their provider or address is resulting in unreliable numbers.

Traffic on philotomy.com is up about 25%, which is surprising, since I haven't posted a damn thing in like...forever.

Oh, I'm hanging in there. It's been pretty crazy, lately.

I've noticed a HUGE uptick in the number of hits on Grognardia over the last couple of months. I used to average about 700 unique visitors a day and now it's generally over 1000. I'm not quite sure what to make of it, but my guess is that a rising tide lifts all boats and the old school revival is definitely a rising tide.

I've been heavily reading Grognardia and linked blogs for the past few weeks. So I'm in those numbers somwehere.
