Check this thread out. I've always wondered about this. Now it's confirmed.

Escapes, puzzles. Long gaming sessions. Holy shit. These guys are way old school.

Now, if you're thinking what I'm thinking...let's get some OSRIC into the prison system!

Heh. That's the way I roll. I'm so gangsta.

IIRC, there was an editor's note in one of the issues of Dragon seven years ago or so talking about the plight of inmates who weren't allowed to play D&D, and how everyone should write their appropriate elected official and ask for this to change. Or something like that.

How about they becoming productive citizens first and then focus on playing (A)D&D?

While I tend agree with the above two posters, I'd say if you're gonna let them buy television and cable access, then why not gaming books?

Well...did you notice in the thread that most of the players aren't short timers. These are the guys doing hard sentences. The writer of the thread is a prison guard - who notes that the gamers for the most part are not the gang-bangers.

A DM friend was imprisoned for selling LSD in the late 80s. When he got out 10 years later, he had one hell of a notebook. He didn't play in the joint but he said the writing was what kept his imagination alive and his brain sane.

Hard to become a productive citizen in a maximum security facility doing 20 to life. Mind you, I'm not an advocate of inmate rights, but at least while they're playing D&D they're not selling contraband, promoting gang affiliations, assaulting fellow inmates or lifting weights all day so as to become a stronger, more aggressive criminal.

In my fantasy mind, I like to think that the D&D players doing hard time are a combination of white collar criminals, drug offenders and high-end bank robbers. I just have difficulty wrapping my head around a guy like T-Bag from Prison Break or a bunch of MS-13 gangstas playing Dragonlance . . .

I have a family member who did almost 10 years, State. He said they played 3.5 the whole time. :-/

Don't know what is worse punishment . . . doing the time or playing THAT game.

Yeah, I felt bad for him. I can't get him interested in 1e, either (my favorite).

I'd think prisoners wouldn't mind 3.5 so much, as they have all the time in the world to sift through their rulebooks to figure out what in the heck that magically reinforced masterwork wooden door hardness is.

And according to the post in the link, many of the games centered around prison breaks and sex (including creepy and criminal forms of it), so maybe D&D in prison isn't such a great idea after all...

He said a lot of times theyd just try to build bad-ass characters and fight against each other. One guy would roll up a level 25 guy and the other guys would all roll up level 10 guys and then they'd have a 4 on 1 battle while the 6th guy would DM. That's one way to do it I guess.
