Don't let conventional wisdom convince you it's a herculean task. Difficult? Sure. I quit cold turkey. The hardest part was not the addiction to whatever they put in the cigs, but the habitual somatic component. Finish a meal? Light up. Have a drink in a bar? Light up. Hands not busy? Light up. Consciously notice these things. Don't try to suppress them with sheer force of will; that's just fighting something that's natural to you. Freely acknowledge the desire, then laugh it off, take a walk/run, or just find something productive to do with your hands ( I know you have enough to do in that category!Mythmere wrote:Not a hernia, it's a strain in the muscles of my lower abdominal wall. I also got Zyban to help stop smoking. We'll see how that goes. If I start flaming everyone in sight starting a couple of days from now, it means I've started quitting and haven't given in yet.
My quit date is in two days.
I ran a lot the same year I quit smoking, so I not only kicked the habit, but lost 40lbs. That's the other thing, don't let conventional wisdom tell you that you'll put on weight. Sure, if you stick a candy bar in your mouth every time you want a cig, but don't do that.
Tell your family to laugh at you if you get grumpy. Not mocking, jeering laughter, but the type of laugh we give out when our dog does something silly and cute. How can you be grumpy at someone who lovingly chuckles and pats your head?
