K&KA Module Writing Month
The forum for the "Contest" is here: http://knights-n-knaves.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=46
Olaberg has suggested a "contest" to see who has the guts and the glory to write a module within the month of December. Results presumably to be posted on K&KA, site admins willing.
RULES (these are based on the National Novel Writing Month Competition)
-ANY game system
-No more than an outline written prior to Dec 1 (whatever dateline you are on)
-Ends on January 2, 2007 (for convenience, we won't make it Dec 31 since we may all be drunk at the end of that day.
-Results may be posted here, but can also be a link to a pdf or whatever.
-Results are NOT judged. If you manage to complete a module, you win: there can obviously be several winners.
-I'll see if MWM Winner can be added to the person's title bar
At midnight ..... GO!

Fun idea. I'll give it a shot (and almost certainly flame out). I agree with stranger that "any game system" seems unnecessarily broad. "Any game system covered at the K&KA or generic/system-free" seems better -- I'm not particularly interested in reading a Vampire: The Requiem adventure, even if it was written by a K&KA member.

I'd wager if we see even one adventure module for a game like, oh say, Vampire, it'll be more of a joke than a serious entry.T. Foster wrote:Fun idea. I s'pect if anyone around here is actually going to devote time to creating a module from scratch (or nearly) within 30 days, they're not going to spend time on something that nobody'll read.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have an Eberuin module to go write. <runs out the room as rotten tomatoes splat against the door shut behind him>

I like this idea!
But... "write a module" is too vague and wishy-washy imo. I suggest that the qualifying target should be:
Write an adventure of at least 5,000 words, containing at least 20 separately-keyed areas, at least one map, at least one combat encounter, at least one fully-detailed treasure, and at least one trick or trap.

I'd kill the "trick or trap" and "treasure" parts. I may write a CoC adventure, for example, and those concepts don't fit quite right.PapersAndPaychecks wrote:I like this idea!

Cool idea. I'll attempt it as well.

OK, I think I've got an idea. A Traveller adventure idea I thought up a few years back (when I was in my heavy Traveller period, unsurprisingly) but never got around to writing. I may already have an outline sitting around somewhere, but even if I do finding it might take more time/effort than just re-writing a new one would. It might also be too ambitious for a one-month writing window, but I guess that's what I'll find out...

December is probably the worst month of the year possible to hold such a contest. The holidays and all the prep for them is coming down the pipe. I'd think after the New Year would make more sense.
Choosing December will probably put a big crimp in the number of submissions...
Just a thought.

It _should_ be hard. The idea is that the constraints fosters productivity, since you don't have time for all the "second thoughts". Jaaz do it!John Stark wrote:December is probably the worst month of the year possible to hold such a contest. The holidays and all the prep for them is coming down the pipe.
