New Bond film thumbs up!

Post by AxeMental »

IMO the last really good Bond film was "Never Say Never Again", that was like 20 years ago.
So, tonight when I saw a GREAT Bond movie, I was blown away.

I have to admit I came into this dragging...and expecting the usual nonsensical crap, and......I already didn't like the guy they picked for Bond (based on some other stuff I'd seen him on, and a few interviews). But, the guy made a great (though ugly bond), it moved more like "From Russia With Love" (with a normal plot, good fight scenes, not over the top special effects).

So anyway, if Gold Finger/Dr. No were 10s, and that last PB Bond movie with the ice hotel-thing (don't recall the name) was a 1.........I'd give CR a 9, maybe a 10. I suppose I'll need to see it again a few times to see if it has that staying power. And thats saying alot, as I'm a tough critic when it comes to Bond.
I'd say Sean Connery is still the best Bond, but this guy beats out Roger Moore.

I haven't seen Daniel Craig as Bond, but Moore was never my favorite. Too campy.

Ian Fleming was so impressed by Connery-as-Bond that he gave Bond Scottish ancestry in later Bond books.

My only complaint about the movie was that the ending was too long, there were bascially two climaxes to the movie. Other than that, hell yeah. This was a great bond moive. Hell, this was a good movie period. Kind of reminds me of the days before action movies crossed over into comedy.

My dad and I were bored out of our minds on Thanksgiving so we went and saw this. I had VERY low expectations despite the rave reviews as flicks like this generally aren't my bag. But I have to say I was impressed -- this film actually works on a couple different levels.

I think my dad now has a crush on the leading actress. I'm a little concerned about it...

I guess so, i haven't read it, but it definately felt like they where trying to fit too much into the movie. The La Chiffe plotline got most of the attention, so it felt that the Mr. White plotline came out of nowhere in the end.

SPOILER ALERT:
In the book Bond defeats LeChiffre (sort of) with the help of SMERSH (climax #1), then he and Vesper Lynd have an affair which ends in climax #2 (sort of).

Your dad should probably rent The Dreamers (which is a pretty terrible movie, but has, umm, "other factors" working in its favor... ).

Yes and No on that.

SPOILER ALERT:
Bond defeats LeChiffre (sort of) with the help of Felix from the CIA (sort of), then he and Vesper have an affair which ends in climax #2. #2 alludes to another organization, which could be SMERSH, but is only hinted at and never named.
All-in-all, that was the best Bond movie I've seen in over 35 years. It was nice to see a return to the character, and a dumping of the ridiculous gadgets and near pansy double-O's.
