Low-level set-piece lair

Bros,

I’d like a low-level set-piece lair for a one-shot for tonight. By low level I mean first level. And by one-shot I mean I’m running a Verbosh campaign, but I have 3 new players tonight and want to kick it off with a splash, and afterward get back to the campaign. Maybe a treasure map sort of deal? Appreciate the advice.

A dwarven brewery has become infested with vermin (giant rats, how boring) which have forced the regular residents from the location. The distraught brewmaster wishes to employ the party for the purpose of evicting the new tenants. The interlopers are under the command of a badguy who has taken a liking to a particularly potent dwarven brew that has caused some unanticipated effects that cause difficulty for our heroes when they finally locate the culprit and face him.

Badguy is a wererat who's getting sloshed on dwarf booze and getting the effects of a berserker or a potion of heroism or something like that from the booze. He has an amulet that lets him control the giant rats.

If they succeed the party gets free drinks on tuesdays unless there is a dwarven holiday.

The only low level dungeon that might fit that off the top of my head is Ghul's "Rats in the Walls".

It might be easy enough to munge to other old school systems.

If you Google one-shot adventures, there are actually quite a few available for free. I'm not saying they are any good....or 1st edition....or one-shot....

DungeonDork— That’s great, except they’ve been fighting rats and wererats for a while now in Verbosh. Also, need a keyed map.

Rats in the Walls— Nah.

Google results— Thanks but nah.

Okay, here’s more what I’m thinking. B1 or B4 or Caverns of Thracia (very deadly) — none of them are one-shots, but they’re stark, you know what I mean? They’re going to make an impression. Except B1 depending on where they go or how it’s stocked (also I have to stock it… ugh). Or Book of Treasure Maps 1 (don’t recall if there’s anything in there super low level).

The carnival is in town. One of it's attractions is a menagerie of dangerous monsters. A group of monster sympathizers has effected their release into the city. The city guard wants them all slain. Mobs are at large with weapons drawn. The party is encouraged to capture them alive by the ringmaster of the carnival for a greater bounty than the city guard offers. One of the monsters turns out to be intelligent and begs the party to help it escape his enslavement by the ringmaster. The party risks being associated with the group that released the monsters if they decide to help and are caught. Various clues are apparent by the type monsters at large and events that are being reported around the city.
A rust monster is having a buffet at the blacksmiths.
A carrior crawler has been reported headed towards the mausoleums.
etc...

The maps are a bit convoluted, but it sounds like what you're looking for. Free on DriveThru...

Thanks again, everyone, truly, but this thread made me realize we should just continue the ongoing Verbosh campaign. It was great!
