A decade since Gary passed

Yesterday (March 4th) marked 10 years of Gary's passing. I didn't do any gaming, but today, I'm finishing work on the adventures I will be running at Gary Con later this week. Continuing to game, most especially with his games, is the most fitting tribute to him I can think of. Nothing beats the fellowship of swapping stories about adventures of times past, or seeing someone "get it" when teaching them one of Gary's games.

RIP in, Gary. You are missed, and well-remembered.

On Friday this week, our son Henry turns 10. I wasn't there for his birth because he arrived 3 1/2 weeks early; I was attending Gary's funeral services. Teaching Ethan (14 next month) and Henry to play AD&D has been a joy, and I'm sure gaming with your family is one of the best ways to play Gary's games and to honor his memory.

This is a link to the eulogies by Harold Johson, Jim Ward, and Luke Gygax at Gary's funeral: https://youtu.be/OftsMoGFOcM Luke's was particularly moving.

Allan.

Can't believe it's been that long.
No statue...
What the devil happened to that "memorial" that was supposed to be funded? Did Gail and her lawyers make off with the dough? I guess that project has evaporated.

Let’s not soil this thread with that sordid subject, please.

Right-oh.

Have there been any noteworthy developments in the RPG biz, esp. in the OS Movement in the past ten years?

Gary may no longer be with us, but those rulebooks have very sturdy binding. They were made to last! :)

Indeed. Thanks for that, Gary!

I know he fought to try and make sure later printings were of the same quality but the Blumes were intractable and we ended up with the Amazing Self-Destructing Unearthed Arcana.

 Yeah it seems more like 3 years ago. Well, its nice this place/community is still around to discuss his game, its past and its future course.

It's profound that he had such an effect on people who met him. That many of us are here just to celebrate his particular style points to a man who made a mark.

Thanks for everything, Gary.

As long as even one person is playing even the worst edition of D&D, you will never truly die.

You mean Mentzer Basic?

Hahaha :D , well I never read any of the BECMI rules (nor the RC) but my understanding is that Mentzer Basic is based on the earlier Basic sets, just emasculated and sanitized because TSR was crawling on its belly in abject moral cowardice in the face of the so-called Satanic Panic. As much as this kind of spineless bowdlerization disgusts me, and as much as Mentzer seems personally reprehensible to me (especially after the last few months), I was actually thinking of "any WotC quote D&D unquote". :P

Having said all that, I prefer to accentuate the positive: Gary, you are missed, and always will be.
