One thing that has been bugging me lately is that I feel I am missing out on a lot of internet content. The reason is because more and more often, when I click a link it takes me to video or audio. The problem is that my lifestyle is not conducive to consuming a lot of video or audio from the internet. I can’t watch/listen at work, and when I’m at home with my wife it seems rude and antisocial to play it out loud, or put in headphones or whatever, especially if it’s long (interviews, podcasts, etc.). I could download audio and play it in my car during my commute, but, most things that seem like interesting clickbait in real time don’t really seem worthwhile enough to listen to later. So, what gives? What am I missing?

I'm with you -- there is about zero time in my life for podcasts and videos. If it's not written in an article (or forum post) that I can consume quickly, it's lost to me.

I'm on the other end; I love putting on a "video" (and then just listening to it). If it's a visual tutorial for painting, I will watch it. I dunno, courses for horses I guess.

5th-hand shared-out stuff on Youtube that has those "OMG Who did this???" smiley face frames on it though? I block that stuff with FBPurity, can't stand it.

I'm a big consumer of youtube stuff, and I'm trying later this spring to really launch my channel so y'all better livey up and change your viewing habits

Oh God, those fucking 15-minute videos that begin with a piece of music, then the presenter introduces themselves and asks me to subscribe, share and like on facebook -- and then they tell me what their video is about (as if I hadn't JUST read it in the description). In my experience I'm often about 2-3 minutes into a fifteen minute video before the content starts, and then I realise it's a high-level overview of the topic that's apparently aimed at pre-teens with severe learning difficulties, or an opinion piece by someone who knew nothing at all about the topic until they skimmed the Wikipedia article ten minutes before they made the video. Because most youtube channels are run by people with nothing to say and fifteen minutes to say it in.

I think all vloggers should be fined a dollar every time they say "errrr". Work out what you want to say in YOUR time, not mine, you fucking cockwomble. And EDIT OUT THE CRAP.

The kind of youtube video I want to watch has very little of the presenter's face in it because it's rammed full of graphics. It doesn't have to be expensive graphics, video powerpoint will do just fine: but the only excuse for making a video is to give me information via my eyes and ears at the same time. And if you've got the knowledge you ought to have, and done the thinking you ought to have, before making a video then you will be able to show me graphics.

Not just any music. A ukelele and a xylophone must be used.

I've got no interest in any of that stuff. When I have occasionally listened to or watched something I've always ended up turning it off after no more than about 2-3 minutes.

Agreed that it is irritating when I can’t read/skim text and have to watch/listen, so much so that I usually close the window and move on to something else.

I almost never listen to podcasts. I do watch videos online, but not gaming-related videos. The videos I watch are usually about guitar stuff (e.g. That Pedal Show), or blacksmithing/metal-work (e.g., Alec Steele), or history and HEMA stuff (e.g., Schola Gladiatoria).

Chalk me up as well for being weak on av content consumption, because I'd rather read the info than watch or listen to it. That's because I read content faster than it's usually presented in av format. The notable exception are the well-made, no bullshit how-to videos. They're great for car repair and home maintenance.

I can't listen to someone talk and do something else at the same time. There's something about a voice that one-tracks my brain into listening to that voice, only. This also goes for music w/vocals. I can't do other work w/ them as background noise.

So podcasts are out, and videos are dependent on free time. But like others have said, if it isn't concise and repeatedly triggering an "I did not know that" out of me in a subject I'm interested in, I don't finish those either.

The things that annoy me about YouTube videos...

- When the preview matches nothing in the video.
- When they have shitty equipment where they are obviously staring at a laptop webcam in their dining room.
- When tutorials posted have no voices...but some weird background music from the 12th Matrix film.
- When someone makes a video just to talk and they have a picture up the whole time. Make a fucking podcast dude!
- "Press the subscribe button so I can prove to advertisers that my videos are watched alot and I can earn money...quit my real job...and sit in my basement making videos. Ahhh...the dream."

I found a really cool channel about mousetraps. That was pretty neat.

I like street food vendor videos from foreign cities.

I have zero patience for any kind of podcast/round-table discussion format audio or video.

Artistic how-to's are great but there's a lot of very amateur ones to sift through.
I like wood-turning a lot. And watching paintings/drawings done at double speed.

I'm the same, and not just with podcasts, YouTube, etc. I'm not a fan of audiobooks (although my kids love them), lectures, etc. And, unless I know the material really well, I find it hard to listen to one thing while doing something else.

Two informational YouTube channels I really do dig are Historia Civilis and latintutorial. Both creators have solid presentation skills, good scripts, and subject matter expertise. They also have day jobs, so they post irregularly but with really high-quality stuff.

I used to subscribe to podcasts and video blogs, but they’d just pile up in my inbox.

There was basically never a time when I’d be able to watch/listen to them when I wouldn’t rather be doing something else. Listening to music mainly.

I still occasionally click on the Extra Credits video game design YouTube channel. But only once in a while and they’re rarely longer than 10 minutes anyway.
