Seven Nights of Horror

Post by Chainsaw »

With Halloween happening next week, we've got just enough time for seven nights of horror. What's on your list? My list is mostly stuff that I think is fun to watch with a beer in hand, but if you want your list to be Seven Scariest or Seven Most Important or Seven Best from the Seventies (etc), that's fine too. Post all of your lists! For me, in no particular order...

Seven I Love
You're Next
Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween
28 Days Later
Zombieland
Evil Dead
Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Seven My Five Year Old Loves
Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest
Scooby-Doo! Frankencreepy
Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie
Hotel Transylvania
Hotel Transylvania 2
The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
Davy Brown, Davy Brown
Where ya gonna be when the hammer comes down?
Can you outshoot the Devil? Outrun his hounds?
Ain't nothing to it but to stay above ground.

First seven that came to mind (not necessarily in this order).
  • 28 Days Later - first time I watched it I was feeling adrenaline rushes (rare from a movie)
  • Evil Dead 2 - classic
  • The Exorcist - classic
  • Exorcist III - George C. Scott dominates in this
  • Pumpkinhead - nostalgia, for me
  • Session 9 - cerebral and creepy, and you need to pay attention. Danvers.
  • The VVitch - great period piece, great imagery, great score, and an ending that doesn't let you down.
Witches, demons, possession, and zombies...

Comedic Horror:
Young Frankenstein
Bruce Campbell vs Army of Darkness
Zombieland
Shaun of the Dead
Tremors
The World's End
This Is The End

I have a lot more horror on queue, and not all of them are comedies, but those are the first seven I could think of in the c/h genre.

Hell yeah! My favorite time of year. Here's my Seven Nights of Horror for 2017:

1. Motel Hell (1980): My favorite campy 80's slasher movie. "It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent's fritters!"
2. Trick 'r Treat (2008): Modern horror classic anthology movie that takes place on Halloween.
3. Sleepy Hollow (1999): The sets in this movie are the most "Halloweeny" that I've ever seen, with maybe the exception of Trick 'r Treat above.
4. The Haunting (1963): Still the best haunted house movie ever made.
5. The Witch (2016): See PJ's comment above
6. Cabin in the Woods (2011): Super fun and over-the-top.
7. Inside (2007): Extremely brutal French home invasion movie.

I'm gonna add The Mothman Prophesies, a movie that gave me genuine creeps upon first viewing. Soundtrack is also suitably eerie.

@Wheggi: Thanks for reminding me of Sleepy Hollow. I'll have to dig that one out and rewatch it.

Here's a big list with some analysis of recent horror movies. I'm getting ready to watch 7+ of them, starting with The Witch.

My seven (in no particular order):

1. Darkness
2. Jacob's Ladder
3. Frailty
4. Angelheart
5. The Invitation
6. I am Not a Serial Killer
7. Jamie Marks is Dead

The last three are ones I saw in the last year or so and enjoyed enough to watch again soon afterward. The others are ones I've been returning to periodically for years. (There are others in that category, some of which have already listed above, but I only had 7 slots.)

Sleepy hollow is an Xmas movie. It ends on like new year's day ;-)
