Walking Dead Season 8 (spoilers)

Anyone watch this last night? What did you think? Let's assume spoilers throughout.
I thought it was decent, though I'm partial to episodes where zombies actually make an noteworthy appearance and where Rick's squad doesn't slip on banana peels the whole time.

I was hoping for a knock-my-socks-off opener like that at the beginning of season 6. This episode left me underwhelmed, and the speechifying was snooze worthy.
I'm kinda warming up to Gregory as a pretty funny character. I'd probably leave Father Peepee Pants behind too. Neegan's last line is save worthy for when PCs in my game get into their next TPK potential situation.

Oh yeah! I forgot about those. I must have blocked out them and the future-flashes.

Well, the whole idea of Negan and his lieutenants willingly exposing themselves to sniper fire on that balcony was stupid. I mean, I know he's arrogant and that was his headquarters and all, but still. Further, why they would have expected any of Gregory's people to believe he wasn't making those threats under duress compounded the stupid. But hey, look over there - horde of zombies attack!

There was too much skipping forward and back in time. My main problem was that Rick and his crew had all that time to develop a plan and assault, and they made no use of the element of surprise? They prepared an elaborate attack, and that was it? The zombies are supposed to finish them off perhaps, but then what's the King Ezekiel's speech about we'll get them on the second and third attack? Maybe legit military tactics are boring?
That being said, I guess I was so looking forward to Rick and company finally assaulting Negan after all these months, I was somewhat relieved to see the plot moving in a better direction. There was also an above average amount of action, so that was good. I look forward to next week's episode. Maybe they won't try to be too fancy with the editing and just move the plot forward.

I like the show overall, through all of the seasons so far and up til now. I've read the comics past this point, so I pretty much know what to expect by the end of this season unless the writers completely take off in another direction.
That being said, when you make a speech with the phrase, "We only need to kill one person." then that "one person" is standing in the open just waiting for any one of the dozen of armed attackers to take the shot that never comes...i have to just shake my head and think this is some terribly lazy writing.

Even more so when they talked about last season that they can't really just kill Negan. They sort of need the people around him to do that. Otherwise the next scumbag will just continue what he did, and with a lot less restraint (which I know is odd to write).
Having read past the war and into the next part of the comics (I only just got to the start of the Whisperers arc and stopped) I might stop watching. That arc didn't really grab me and don't really need to read something so psychologically draining and unfulfilling.

The speechifying is absolutely getting old. I understand they want to show the urgency of it all but it is way past repetitive now.

Yeah I would agree totally. If they intended just to kill one person than one dude with a sniper rifle could have taken Neegan down immediately and ended the war prematurely. Instead they go to all the effort to bring the zombie horde and then leave without making sure that the job is even done.
And the flashback thing was definitely weird. I accidentally caught part of the Talking Dead show before watching the episode this time so I gather that somewhere down the line Rick is going to be in a coma or something. That was not made clear in the episode but it became obvious when you see him as "old rick with a gray beard and a cane" versus younger rick without. So obviously somewhere in between something has to happen in order for that to occur.
I do like the show and cannot stop watching it but sometimes it does not make all that much sense. There are certain things a person just has to disbelieve in order to accept the walking dead as it is. For one thing..... how is it that all the gas in the cars can still be siphoned off and usable after all these years..... do the gas tanks all have stabilizer in them? I mean in my world.....gas that does not have stabilizer in it breaks down after a certain time without use... just saying....

Agreed. We could make a list a mile long, probably. For example, exposure to the elements for years would have deteriorated the undead into nothing by now. It's not like some sort of brain infection that reanimates them would have made them immune to rotting away. Occasionally I see a dead animal in my back yard, something that's only been dead for a few days. Everything but the bone's already disintegrating and flimsy. So, the idea of these undead people walking around for years and then having the "strength" of tendon/muscle to attack/bite people...

I'm going to assume your repeated posts were a piece of brilliant performance art.

Or how they can see anything with rotten eyes. Or hear anything with rotten ears. Or need or want to eat with rotten digestive systems, which in some cases are ripped out and dragging the ground. Or how a "virus" could possibly allow rotting corpses to walk around in the first place. Or...
I could buy magical zombies. Tell me it's voodoo, and I will have no further questions. I just can't buy rotting corpses walking around because of a "virus".

Preach it, brother!

Agreed. Magic, or simply no explanation at all, works better to me because it doesn't invite all these questions of "science."

Anybody other than me watch
Revolution? If you did, then do you recall what happened to folks in the last season?
Spoilers for Revolution.
Nanites.
If they can take full control of a living being, then why not a dead one? An infested body could be wholly supported by the little fuckers. A walker is nothing but a chassis animated by billions of microscopic robots. Of course, the robots are a computer virus programmed to replicate. That's why the zombies are attracted to new potential host machines. Feeding gives their host new raw materials.
Something in the nanite virus, either a bug or a feature, leaves the nanites in hibernation until brain death occurs.
Science can explain how a virus can keep a decaying body ambulatory and *seemingly* capable of receiving audio and visual signals.
If I can accept a show about zombies, then I can accept the virus isn't wholly biological.

I'd like a zombie show that featured zombies rather than man's inhumanity to man.
