Stay safe, gentlemen.

I live well away from the coast that I have nothing to worry about.
Unfortunately, I do have a friend who lives in Webster (near Houston). She's stranded at her house right now. She's okay but things keep getting worse all around her.

Dear God.
We're about fifteen miles in a straight line from the St. Johns, and we were told by our Realtor that it has never flooded. Now, I'm sure there's people in Houston in neighborhoods that had "never flooded" who've lost everything. It definitely gives me pause since we're more likely to be hit than not. A storm like this over very-nearly-flat Florida would essentially have ended habitability for most of the affected part of the state for a long and indeterminate amount of time.

Areas that "never flooded" are seeing 4 feet of water and more.thedungeondelver wrote: Now, I'm sure there's people in Houston in neighborhoods that had "never flooded" who've lost everything. This is going to completely change the face of this city for years to come.

How many people in the city are going to have functional cars after its over?

I haven't seen any numbers like that yet but people are going to need vehicles for sure.
I'm considering offering ride shares from the transit center near my home to people who work in my area who have lost their vehicles once water recedes and commerce resumes. Going to research that later. It's going to be a bad time to buy a vehicle with any confidence around there that's for sure. And a good time to be a mechanic.

Living in the zone of a disaster (natural or otherwise) is pure misery. I am hoping for the best, for everyone affected by this.

If it helps, there is life after water. Even a fuck ton of water that puts 80% of a city under 8' to 12' of water for over a month. And, the New Orleans metro is only a fifth or quarter of the Houston metro economic engine.

If you're anywhere in the CONUS and you're looking to buy a used car between now and this time next year, BEWARE. There's going to be a lot, I mean a lot of unscrupulous car dealers moving iron that spent a month under water and was barely cosmetically and mechanically fixed up.

And i hope ANY ONE doing that gets hammered by the law for gouging and other illegal activities..thedungeondelver wrote:If you're anywhere in the CONUS and you're looking to buy a used car between now and this time next year, BEWARE. We finally emerged from hiding today and got out to the store and ate lunch out. Fortunately, it's not flooding here but areas a mile away or less are under mandatory evacuation as the Brazos River crests. There's actually a little blue sky out this afternoon.

The horror that is floating fire ant colonies was mentioned up-thread. The Houston Chronicle shared this photo today:

Yeah, it was subsequently decided to whisk the offending posts away to the planes of Limbo of neutral (absolute) chaos (entropy).Ratbreath wrote:I clicked the link and it says I'm not authorized to view that forum. Moderator only then? Just wondering.
