Re: Batten down the hatches, Texans.
Ive often wondered when a place like houston/galviston etc get this level of rain fall, why can't they have pipelines/pumps to SHIP that excess water to those states that continually get drought conditions?
Re: Batten down the hatches, Texans.
... Because that pipeline would end up going through some Neo-Nazi Pet Cemetery and pissing off some Spotted Owl Justice Warrior group.

17.39" of rain in my neighborhood, today (with 2 hours to go), according to the closest weather monitoring station. That's around 2 feet of rain in the last two days. Incredible.

We're really lucky to be this far North. Water hasn't even gotten over the top of the curb this whole time. Counting our blessings to be sure.

A decent twitter thread giving a decent explanation for how HOLYFUCKINGSHITSTORM drainage is handled in Houston. Oddly enough my son asked why don't they use the highways and a drainage solution and I (incorrectly) said that's a crazy idea. As in turns out, that's really part of the plan. Which I guess makes sense if you're gonna build in a crazy location like Houston (and then build with little planning for shit like hurricane precipitation).

Also, you know it's never a good sign when you have to break out the log graphs for anything, especially shit like water discharge rates (8,000+ gallons/second!)

Re: Batten down the hatches, Texans.
I went around my neighborhood, again, this morning to check the storm drains for blockage. They were clear. The main drainage gully for the neighborhood was at least 8 feet below its banks (very rough eyeball estimate), as was the main secondary channel that feeds into it. Still plenty of water in them, though.
The big creeks north and south of us are both out of their banks (by 17+ feet and 10+ feet in some areas). Our neighborhood's main drainage goes into the creek to the south of us. (We're about 2.5 miles away from either one.)
Useful info on Houston drainage:
https://www.harriscountyfws.org/ (Shows current channel levels, where they have sensors.)
http://harriscountyfemt.org/ (Show 100 year and 500 year floodplains, drainage channels, and ponding areas.)
The big news last night was that they opened dams at the Addicks and Barker reservoirs. That's flooding some up and downstream neighborhoods. I guess they had to.

Anyone hear from Matt or Joe? Both of them are (or were) in the Sugarland/Missouri City area. Some areas of Fort Bend had a mandatory evac order issued.

Am I correct in the impression that this one's tougher than the other hurricanes that have hit the US recently?

Re: Batten down the hatches, Texans.
Yeah. The big problem is the storm has parked itself over an area that has a propensity to flood anyway. Forecasters are predicting over a year's worth of rain in a two or three day period. There's just no place for all the water to go.Melan wrote:Keep safe, everyone!

And this is the US's 4th biggest city. 6 or 8 million people when all the outlying areas are taken into account. There was no way to get everyone out in time.

Re: Batten down the hatches, Texans.
When it made landfall it was pretty heavyweight (pretty much destroyed the town of Rockport). But it's also brought unprecedented amounts of rain to heavily populated areas, with flooding impact expected to be at least as damaging as Katrina was. News is characterizing it as "landmark", "lifetime storm," et cetera.Melan wrote:Keep safe, everyone!
