Texas Non-Con

Post by Steve »

Any Texas area folks interested in getting together for a weekend of D&D gaming? Rent a room at a motel in the Austin-DFW-Houston triangle, people show up Saturday morning, leave Sunday evening, and gorge on D&D and pizza delivery in between?

LOCATION
Austin, DFW, or a smaller more central city such as Waco or Bryan/College Station. 6 to 12 committed attendees - a medium to large group of forum folks, rotating the DM duties through the weekend.

DATE
Any weekend between October and mid-December, or March or later. I'm good for most any Sat-Sun non-holiday weekend with a few weeks notice.

Anyone interested?

Here's a possible location:

A bunch of us from the "Great Austin-Dallas-Houston Triangle" have used Ama's restaurant a number of times for a combined Saturday meetup. I'm not sure if the Holiday Inn (next door to the restaurant) has any conference rooms, but it might be worth checking out. The location of the town, Hearne, is pretty central to the Great Triangle.

Just an FYI.

Anyway-- I'm in if the boss says it's OK. I'll check with her and get back to you. :D

UPDATE: I got permission!!!

And, the Holiday Inn does have a room. Not sure about the cost, but here's a picture:

I'm interested. I probably could do any (non-holiday) dates within these time ranges given a couple of weeks notice.

What do y'all think is the best time? I'm thinking early November (hopefully after the heat but before the holiday/shopping season) such as Nov 4-5, or 11-12.

Texas A&M is having three home games in a row at that time. Will that cause a problem for meeting in Hearne?

Hrm. That's 3.5 hours from me. Might be do-able. I'd have to ask for a weekend off but with enough advanced notice that should be okay. Probably the rough part would be staying awake. I normally work nights and afternoons and sleep most of the day.

Other than making Ama's unusually crowded? That Holiday Inn's rooms might fill up, but I doubt the conference room would be in use.

I will not be available for this venture but I'm happy to advise and encourage.

Although I am happy about the revival of TexMex Con, I have to say I am more excited about the idea of something DFW or, rather on the I35 corridor.

Waco would be rad. And folks in Houston can get there fast enough.

I just hate winding my way along a two lane road behind Aunti Maudie going 50 mph. I'd rather power up I35 and just get there.

So I am more for Steve's original proposal of something like Waco. I'm sure we could find something nice there.

That said, if we all decide to resurrect the "Hearn Experience" (which I never got to taste, sadly), then I will gladly drive to Hearn.

November should work for me. I could do Saturday 11/4 or Saturday 11/18.

Fight on!

I can do Waco, and will without complaint if that's what works best for the group as a whole. But Hearne would be easier for Houstonians.

Austin to Waco and Austin to Hearne are roughly equivalent in terms of time (at least according to Google Maps). But Houston (Spring really) to Waco is almost 3 hours; to Hearne is about an hour less.

I'm north of DFW, so for me it's about 2 hours to Waco, and nearly 3.5 hours to Hearne.

As for Waco, Baylor doesn't play there either weekend (Nov 4th or 11th).

Whoa! 3.5 hours is a long drive. Are you up near Gainesville, Steve?

Here's another idea... The Shady Oaks Cabins near Fairfield, TX.

http://www.shadyoakscabins.com/rates/

You can rent a "quadplex" (sleeps 8 people) for $250. (Split 8 ways, that's about $32 a head.)

The description on the Website says "Great for crew housing or large events."

Travel time from Austin/Houston/Steve's-house-north-of-Ft.-Worth is about 2hr,50m in all directions.

Just an idea. I've never been to these cabins and know nothing about them other than what's on the Website.

Nah, I'm not that far north. The route planner I used estimated 3hr & 11min, but I think it woefully underestimated the current construction/traffic situation here. The worst part of my drive will be getting into and through Fort Worth (like navigating the Tomb of Horrors ), but that's true wherever we end up meeting.

I figure we can give folks another week or two to see this thread, check their schedules, announce their interest and availability, and then we can pick a date and location to maximize attendance.

We'll need at least 6 people firmly committed to attending the whole weekend to move forward. That way, even if a couple of folks have to cancel at the last minute, we'd still have enough for 1 DM and 3 players. I'm one, and it sounds like Jimm is another, so we just need 4 more.

I'm willing to rent a conference room for a couple of days, as that's better than the hassle and expense of flying out of state for a con. My hope is to get in over 12 hours of gaming across 2 days, rotating 3+ DMs/games.
