I have a hunch the story would end really badly the same way Lord of the Rings would end really badly if you outfitted the good guys with futuristic space trooper equipment. I envision the dwarves (sans Bilbo, whom Thorin had had executed for desertion and double-crossing) standing in the middle of the smoking ruins of Lake Town, charred corpses everywhere and the great dragon Smaug slain pitifully, pondering where things had gone really south. Tolkien had a few things to say about these kinds of powergaming scenarios...

(It'd make for great D&D, though. :) )
"D&D is the ultimate right wing wet dream. A bunch of guys who are better than your average joe set out into the middle of nowhere where they murder and kill everything they come across in order to stockpile gold and elaborate magical bling. There are no taxes, no state and any poor people that get in your way get their village burned to the ground. It's like Ayn Rand on PCP." - Mr. Analytical

I'd imagine a lot of stories would end quickly if the characters were armed with [insert technological anachronism here].

I use radium pistols, laser rifles, etc in my games. They're really just reskinned wands, rods and staves. No game breaking effects that I have seen yet. Maybe if you allowed a suitcase nuke into the game or something?

Anyway, this thread title always me think of:

Davy Brown, Davy Brown
Where ya gonna be when the hammer comes down?
Can you outshoot the Devil? Outrun his hounds?
Ain't nothing to it but to stay above ground.

Having the nukes is one thing, but to be able to get to minimum safe distance before detonation is another!

Player: "I throw my nuclear grenade at the horde of onrushing orcs."
DM: "Fine. It lands in their midst, and a huge mushroom cloud rises up into the stratosphere. Both the orcs and you take 10,000,000d6 damage."
Player: "Do I get a saving throw?"
DM: *facepalm*
