Still I do wonder if Tramp (and other artists) at TSR were inspired by comics like these. I mean, the illustration on the original woodgrain D&D set was straight from an issue of Dr. Strange...!

I can't imagine that they weren't. Trampier, Otus and Willingham in particular have a lot of Jack Kirby in them. I'd bet Ditko and Steranko were both big influences as well given the time period and the ages of the people involved. That reminds me, though, I should see if there's a Groo the Wanderer omnibus out there. I'd love to read them all.

yup. I always wondered if the totem pole down the road in Chicago's Field Museum provided some inspiration, as well. Especially the bear totem seen in the back of this pic:thedungeondelver wrote:Fourth "sin" from the right remind anyone of anything?
