Eating the Monster Manual

Post by gizmomathboy »

In case your players get into an odd mood.

I don't think I've had any that tried to eat some of the monsters. Mostly just claiming chunks for trophies or to sell.

The Hackamaster Hacklopedias, which hew very closely to the Monster Manuals in most respects had a category for "yield" that would tell you what parts were worth keeping from your kill. Tons of crafting and cooking ideas in there.
The DUNGEON MASTERS GUIDE City of Brass cover is good and bad at the same time. While its very representational of a high level adventure, it sends a clear message to the dumb: Satan is going to cornhole Miss USA with a big red member and theres nothing science or the military can do about it. - Gene Weigel

Fun stuff!

I love it when players try things like eating parts of the monsters. Sadly, this does not happen too much. I think they fear it opens the door to my creating some really fucked up mutation.... "Great idea! Hold on, let me get my Gamma World book."

Back in the 1980's my DM had a tavern where you could haul your kills and have them roasted or to perfection, Beholder steaks anyone? There was also a place called the Demon's Dive. Fresh "sea food" was always on the menu. If you wanted it they'd hand you a plate and a large knife and direct you to the aquarium in the far corner. As you approached large tentacles would reach out to attack you! What you hacked off (assuming you survived) was sent to the kitchen for cooking.

That's great, simrion!

Some monsters are more obviously edible than others. In The Maze of Peril, Boinger wants to cook a giant crab after defeating it on an underground beach in the dungeon.

I've had a few players in my Black Reservoir level (based on Gygax's short story) cook the giant crabs that they encountered :D

I wonder if any of you have had characters who come from a culture where eating the hearts of one's enemies is practiced. Eating the heart of a dragon (I would imagine) would have some remarkable side-effects.

There was a "canonical list of NPCs you don't want in your campaign" in Space Gamer/Fantasy Gamer from SJG back in the day, and two of the characters were "Fastfood and the Great Muncher" - basically two adventurers who were doing just as the thread is titled, and could always be found in taverns and inns recounting their various delicious exploits, longing after toasted red dragon ears, etc. and always looking for a new party of adventurers to help them track down a new meal - usually because all the previous hirelings had been eaten in turn by the creature(s) they were seeking to make a meal of in the first place.

I can scan it if anyone would like to see it?
