Don't bother except for this last season. It's the best of his work. All you need to know in order to catch up is that Missy is the Master.
In the interim, I basically quit caring about any Doctors after Peter Davison.
You liked Davison? Always thought his shows were ponderous and boring, except for perhaps The Five Doctors.

I really, really liked the episode Heaven Sent - one of the better episodes of the entire new run, I thought. There were a few other decent bits last season but, overall, it was pretty lackluster. I didn't think this one was all that much better, though every season has a few gems. Such a waste of a good actor with Capaldi, though. Alas.
For the uninitiated, here's a sample of Capaldi's intense acting.

As that clip reminds us, Peter Capaldi is the best actor to ever portray The Doctor by a very wide margin. That his entire first season - a full third of his time in the role - was wasted on terrible scripts is a real tragedy. With good scripts his tenure could have been the high point in the entire history of the show. Alas, as it turned out, he barely makes the top half, and it was all Moffatt's fault.

I'm not a Whovian. I've barely even seen any pre-Moffat Whos.
I liked the season with Eccleston. I tolerated Tenant's first season and then lost interest quickly from there. It's quite possible that it was only Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) that was holding my interest.

It might be. But those were also the two best seasons of the new run.

Billy Piper, besides being good looking, is also a helluva actress. Her season with Tennant was the best of his time on the show because the chemistry between the two was breathable.

I have not been keeping up with Doctor Who, so I am not sure what exactly is going on. However, I am one-hundred percent certain that any new Doctor will live or die by the scripts.

Barely. He was a let-down from Baker to be sure, but so much, much better than Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, that he is a bit more than tolerable.
I think Sylvester McCoy was pretty good, but everything around him (writing, production, supporting cast) was such shit that he never had a chance. Paul McGann (from the terrible mid-90s TV-movie attempted-reboot) also could've been good in other circumstances.
But yeah, Colin Baker unquestionably sucked.

He hardly got a chance, and did better in the Big Finish books. He did, however, get one last ride.

Although Peter Capaldi is undeniably an excellent actor who was ill-served by his scripts, I feel the best actor to portray the Doctor so far was Peter Cushing. Second best is a toss-up between McGann, Capaldi and Ecclestone.
I don't know how good Jodie Whittaker is but I agree with others that she'll stand or fall by the scripts. Out of the two realistic choices for Moffatt's successor, they picked Chris "Torchwood" Chibnall over Toby "Being Human" Whithouse. Whithouse is undoubtedly the better writer.
Yeah, that mini-episode (and, for that matter, everything about the 50th anniversary celebration - including/especially that silly mockumentary thing with Davison, C. Baker, McCoy, and Russell T. Davies all angling to be included) was great!

I'm down with that. The Comet network ran his two movies recently.
