Jodie Whittaker has been announced as Doctor Who's 13th Time Lord - the first woman to be given the role.
The new Doctor's identity was revealed in a trailer broadcast at the end of the Wimbledon men's singles final.
The Broadchurch star succeeds Peter Capaldi, who took over the role in 2013 and leaves in the forthcoming Christmas special.
Whittaker, 35, said it was "overwhelming, as a feminist" to become the next Doctor.
She will make her debut on the sci-fi show when the Doctor regenerates in the Christmas Day special.
Personally, I think it's past time to have a female Doctor, and I can't understand all the flak I'm seeing on FB and other places. Give her a chance, for chrissakes.

I've not followed Dr. Who much in the past decade, but my vague recollection is that there were only supposed be 12 incarnations, right? So, does the 13th doctor become a "new" doctor, or is there some time-travel paradox thingy at work to extend the "current" doctor into another reincarnation?

Allan.
A Time Lord typically has 12 regenerations, giving 13 incarnations. The Doctor, BTW, was granted a whole new cycle of regenerations by the Time Lords so he could live in order to save their asses.

Baker owned the role, to be sure. You should give Peter Capaldi a chance, particulary his last season which will wrap up with the Christmas Special this year. He did a bang up job as the Doctor.

Nah. My only exposure to Doctor Who was watching random Tom Baker episodes on PBS as a kid, so everyone before and after him, regardless of gender, seems wrong to me. There'll only ever be one Doctor Who in my book.

Weirdly, my wife and I just watched the third season of Broadchurch, where she had a role (continued from previous seasons) as a grieving mother/social worker. With no other exposure to her work, it's... difficult to picture her in the role of the Doctor. But I'm willing to give her a chance. Why not?
She's the cheating wife from an episode of Black Mirror. Her acting skill at portraying a liar convincing the audience she's on the up and up with just a hint of obfuscation while maintaining her credibility is good. She should make a good Doctor if provided good scripts.

That's a big if. Capaldi was handed some shit scripts and did his best. Of course, there's a new producer coming aboard and maybe he'll have higher standards that Moffat did.

My 15yo freaked out at the end of the video. She was thrilled. The boy friend was floored. I heard her facetiming him and making him watch the YouTube. It was interesting to hear him splutter.
She's all about the new guys, and a bigger fan than I. Her school backpack is a Tardis. I made her watch the very first couple of episodes, in B&W as well as some of the Tom Baker ones.
She's my oldest, of four daughters, so I'm always happy about stuff like this.

Well-said, Donovan!
Allan.
Ha! Thanks.
Anyway, for folks with a broader interest in Doctor Who, I hope the latest show's well done.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the new Doctor and new show-runner. The last season with Capaldi was surprisingly decent - I guess maybe knowing it was his last rodeo inspired Steven Moffatt to actually try a bit harder.

I gave up during Fez-heads run, and have been meaning to give Capaldi a look but have never been motivated enough to do so. In the interim, I basically quit caring about any Doctors after Peter Davison.
