"resurrecting old threads"

Post by garhkal »

After reading the ground rules around here, i see nothing on thread resurrection.. So what is the policy around here on it?? Is it allowed? If so, how far back can one go to bring back an old thread?

I don't think there is a rule concerning resurrecting threads, but of course if you do it to the point of irritation (say, if you're bringing tons of threads back from the dead just to argue piddly rules minutiae) you'll just be seen as an irritating fucktard and most likely shown the door. Best just to observe the culture here and follow your best judgement.

I think it is permissible, but the petitioner must first submit to a public spanking by the forum Elders (blessed be their names!), in addition to the filing of several thousand pages of forms in quadruplicate, and a variety of fees and charges. Frankly, I just start a new thread, as my posterior is too sore.

Personally, I have a preference for resurrecting (though please do state that you are resurrecting, so as to avoid confusion) over starting a new thread on an existing topic, simply because I view the forum format as to some degree an archive of information and ideas, and so that’s better organizationally.

But I would agree with Wheggi that we have seen from time to time a new poster come in and resurrect a ton of threads (usually about rules minutiae), and that’s pretty annoying as honestly I end up hitting “Mark Forums Read” a lot, so, I miss some genuine new content. Maybe this happens when someone is catching up on old threads and feels a need to add something. So, don’t do that. But if you have a new question that’s eating at you and you want to start a new thread but find an old one instead, go ahead and resurrect it.

One of the things that can be particularly irritating is to have a longer thread resurrected with a reply that really adds nothing to the conversation. If you plan to resurrect a thread, I would recommend following two guidelines.

1) Make sure you read the entire thread before posting.
2) If what you plan to write has already been thoroughly covered, maybe don't post.

In moderation, the habit of occasionally bringing back a good thread, by adding a substantive comment, is welcome behaviour on K&KA.

I'm totally going to bump this thread when it drops to the second page.

It is not really a matter of quantity, but quality. Nobody would be upset if you resurrected a hundred threads as long as what you added was insightful and interesting. Reiterating posts that you have already made at Dragonsfoot is probably going to be a waste of time, though,as you are not reaching anybody new here in terms of audience.

You might also want to keep in mind that this place is not a fire hydrant and you don't need to piss on every thread to mark your territory.
