I know what you mean. Don't get the wrong idea... this form of travel is highly experimental and classified, so it's probably going to wash out or something.
Another reason they shouldn't have done a prequel series. They should have done some type of 28th century version instead.
Wizard, that'd require more imagination than CBS and Paramount seem capable of mustering these days.

Otoh, The Orville is becoming a better Trek show with every new episode. If OST is 1e, and ST:NG is 2e, then Orville is something like 1.5e with comedy. While the pc vibe of the show is about 75% of NG, the crew has no problem fucking up the bad guys who need it. There's none of the regret exhibited by Picard and crew for having used violence even in self defense. This crew knows the assholes had it coming. They prefer to stun, but blow up shit when the situation calls for it.
Imagine the crew of the Orville is a random sampling of the Alehouse, and that they also share the ideals of the OST Federation. They're irreverent, imperfect, well-meaning, fairly tight and capable.
Horn fanfare in show theme. Check
Dramatic incidental music. Check
Clean, sleek ship design. Check
A new adventure every week. Check
Characters/actors chemistry*. Check
Clever, maybe slightly hokey, solutions.** Check
* Probably the most important ingredient.
** Like Kirk's gunpowder

Just watched episode 4 of the Orville and thought it was quite good. The Mr. Potato-Head joke made me laugh out loud.

To make a better Star Trek series, I cast Mesner's Borrowing Hand...

Yeah, The Orville is more ST than ST now.

They are grabbing plot ideas from both TOS and NG but I like what they are doing with them.

Well, did you notice who one of the producers is? Brannon Braga.

So....basically it's Hackmaster.
My wife is actually the Trek fan of the household for NG and Enterprise. We've been watching and enjoying Orville since it started, I hope they can keep it going at least for a couple seasons.

But it is the funny Hackmaster that Jolly wrote about in the strips not the crap that tried to be an rpg.

As someone says in the ensuing comments, here's some eye bleach to remove the sting of Discovery:

The show been getting better. The 5th and 6th are the strongest ones yet. We will see what happens next week as it more about the science fiction than something character driven. Still if you are welded to canon the show going to drive you ape shit but it is not Abrams Star Trek at this point.
Still like the Orville better tho.

I haven't watched Discovery but I'm stunned that I am enjoying The Orville. First episode was rather shakey but damn if that second one just set a high bar.
I like the more "relaxed version of Star Trek" but it gets too "relaxed" in its humor but that's about all one can expect from Seth MacFarlane.

Well, Ol' Uncle Jimmy... and I've been a Trekkie since age 3 (when I thought phasers shot bullets really fast), so that's going on 47 years now.... thinks the show is a goddamned abortion, but YMMV.
Now, besides AustinJimm's great work, if you want to watch some more
REAL
STAR TREK
then catch the Star Trek Continues series on Youtube.
