Cool find in the toy aisle

Post by rogatny »

In the cheap toy aisle of my local Walgreens, I found "Dice Bonanza 60 Dice" for $10.

It's nothing but a plastic tube full of 60 various dice. My understanding is each tube has a little bit different variety. The one I got had 2 each 20, 12, 10, and 8. 4 pink 4 siders. A number of different sets of six-sided dice in different colors and sizes. 4 or 5 six-sided dice with letters instead of numbers - none of these dice had the same group of letters. 3 or 4 with playing card faces (ace of spades, queen of diamonds, etc.) 2 big six siders that had different colors on each face. 4 smaller six siders with 3 colors (each color was on 2 faces). You get the idea.

No rules, no directions, nothing whatsoever telling you what you should do with the dice.

Here's what it looks like:

Anyway, something for you dice freaks to be on the lookout for.

Anyone else find any cool D&D-ish toys/tools in unexpected places?

I saw that Target had the same set the other day. I assume their's, and Walgreen's, stock is the same nationwide.

Hard to believe that one could find polyhedral dice in a Walgreens!
You'll now have to invent a game where all those dice are mandatory!

I think the image I posted is from the Target site. So, yeah, I think they're the same.

I definitely want to integrate the letters, colors, and playing card dice into my D&D games.

Isn't there a thing in the DMG about using a playing card die for NPC reactions?

Also, I now really, really want to go to Wallgreen's or Target and buy one of these!

DMG, pg. 10 wrote:The author has a d6 with the following faces: SPADE, CLUB, CLUB, DIAMOND, DIAMOND, HEART. If, during an encounter, players meet a character whose reaction is uncertain, the card suit die is rolled in conjunction with 3d6. Black suits mean dislike, with the SPADE equalling hate, while red equals like, the HEART being great favor. The 3d6 give a bell-shaped probability curve of 3-18, with 9-12 being the mean spread. SPADE 18 means absolute and unchangeable hate, while HEART 18 indicates the opposite. CLUBS or DIAMONDS can be altered by discourse, rewards, etc. Thus, CLUBS 12 could possibly be altered to CLUBS 3 by offer of a tribute or favor, CLUBS 3 changed to DIAMONDS 3 by a gift, etc.
That's awesome! I don't know how many times I've skimmed over that section and thought, "I can just ignore that..."

In this case, the playing card dice have the following faces:

Ace of Clubs
King of Diamonds
a green queen, looks like she's holding a flower in her left hand, which would make her the Queen of Hearts
a blue jack, one-eyed, facing to our right, which makes him the Jack of Spades.
10 of spades
9 of hearts

Now I need another set, so I can have at least 5 of the playing card dice, so it can be a poker hand roller.

I bought a set of "poker dice" from a novelty supplier online. I like them but I've not yet found a use for them.

I noticed the parallel between Shopkins and the weird food creatures in Field Guide to Encounters: "oatmeal", etc.

Target carries these dice too.
Found some there a while back.

I didn't buy them at the time, but I was somewhere (K-Mart?) where they had the "prize bubble" vending machine - one was "Robot Warriors" and it was all cheap and nasty knock-offs of Ral Partha's Macross/Battletech minis. They were terrible looking! But, there they were. If I'd been more into kitbashing at the time I might have spent a few bucks...

I was walking through the local arts and craft store, looking for these little plastic compartmentalized trays that you can usually find in the sewing or scrapbooking aisles. They're perfect for storing chits, counters, dice, minis, etc. and you can usually pick them up for $2 to $6, depending on the size.

While doing so, I found some Safari Ltd. Toobs. Plastic tubes full of little plastic figures. I grabbed one called "Knights and Dragons" and another called "Lair of the Dragons." Both $9.00. Decent little toy soldier types perfect for cheap minis.

You can also find them on amazon.com or order directly from the company. http://www.safariltd.com

There are some really cool D&Dish figures you can order individually, but at a relatively hefty price.

Scylla there is $17.

Hobby Lobby & Wal*Mart carry those toy lines. I got a toob of dinosaurs and another of aquatic creatures for the sharks. And frawgs. Gotta have frawgs. 8)
