Fire and Axe boardgame

Post by francisca »

I can say for certain, this is one of the best boardgames I own. It was recently reprinted. I cannot recommend it enough.

I haven't purchased the new one, but browsing boardgamegeek.com should be able to tell you if there are any game changers in the new edition.

Anyway, the new version (by IDW) is available dirt cheap on amazon prime ($25):

If you enjoy boardgames, this is a must buy. In particular, I think Grodog, Chainsaw, Welleran and probably TRP would like it. The only knock is you have to have 3, but on the upside, the gameplay is great with 3, 4, or 5, and slightly different with each number of players. There are multiple strategies you can try each game....and you can hamper your opponents, without totally screwing them.

sounds like there is an issue with the masts breaking on the ships included in the newer version.

Have you played with your boys, Rich, and if so did they enjoy it, or is the game primarily for teens/adults? Ethan and Henry are nearly 12 and 8 now, and have enjoyed Pandemic, Forbidden Island, Guildhall, Dominion, and Magic the Gathering (and AD&D of course!).

Aside: Henry keeps reading all the recommended ages for different games and saying, "Dada, how come they say I have to be older to play this game?" ;)

No, haven't played with the boys. The older two could handle it, though (16 and 13). The nine year old is a few years off, though.

One thing in it's favor: you can play in silos if you want, that is, people can run off and do their own thing without too much head to head stuff. You could even stack the saga deck such that you don't end up with 3 upturned cards working the same region, then tell them "you work on that saga, I'll work on that one, etc...", and leave out the powerful rune cards.

I love this game! I have the Asmodee version. I picked it up after playing it at a local SF convention, just after that edition was printed.

earlier, I had posted two links in the OP, showing both the newer, IDW edition, and the previous, Asmodee edition. A friend had purchased both. Turns out the guy selling the older, Asmodee edition was full of shit. My Buddy Eric sent me this mail a couple minutes ago, explaining that he got the IDW edition from the guy claiming to have the Asmodee edition.

Sorry for the confusion.

The new one has the issue with the breaking masts.

Eric has played my copy of the Asmodee edition. I'll see if I can get him to post a review of the new, IDW version, comparing and contrasting the old and new.

Indeed, I ordered from that fool and had to return it as well. Very easy through Amazon though.
