If Arcade - Rastan https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2MbA2kE-_JQ

If console - River Raid (atari 2600) and most of the Hockey games for various platforms.

I used to play Guild Wars & Guild Wars 2 a lot until our daughter decided to show up and grace us with her presence last year.

Now I mostly play mobile apps on my tablet - Ascension deckbuilding game, Brogue, and Carcassone.

Don't have one. Can't recall the last one I enjoyed playing. Maybe Civ4?
I did enjoy Pharaoh and the Cleopatra expansion.

In console games, I liked DragonQuest 8 and Final Fantasy 9 but I got bored with both about 2/3rds of the way through, so I've never finished either.

I basically swore off computer games more than a decade ago, and I think my life is better for it. The idea was to channel that energy towards getting humans together at the gaming table. That’s a lot more difficult than a click of the mouse, but much more rewarding.

Of course, DISCUSSING tabletop games has more or less filled that niche!

I did play Civ4 once or twice with some of my tabletop buddies. It was a blast.

In my childhood I loved many D&D-like games. Might & Magic II was a great one.

Master of Magic and Doom 2, oh yes.

Let's not forget, the original, the paramount of the 4X Space Strategy Genre, that's right, Master of Orion 2!

Honorable mentions: TIE Fighter, X-Wing, Battlefield 2, Civilization 4 and 5.

Picking a favorite is difficult. I love games from across all generations, and I really think there isn't a "best game ever" option. Below is a list of what I consider to be my favorite games. Games under the Classic category I find myself going back to play every couple years, and will probably continue playing for as long as digital media with monitors exist. Modern games are the games that I consider just as good, but either outpaced by technology or just not worth replaying.

All Time Classics:
  • Nethack
  • Dwarf Fortress
  • Wizardry I, II, and III
  • Temple of Elemental Evil
  • Thief (the first and original one)
Great Modern Games:
  • Demons Souls/Dark Souls series
  • Pool of Radiance (Gold Box)(nigh unplayable, but by god it's still a great game)
  • EvE Online (only with real-life friends)
  • War Thunder (my dirty little secret)
  • Shadow of the Colossus
  • The Last of Us
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Devil May Cry (the first and original one)
  • Portal 1 & 2
  • Diablo 1
  • Everquest (in 1999 only)
  • Ultima Online (in 1997 only)
  • One Elder Scrolls Game (but not more than one)
  • Alien Isolation
  • King's Quest Series
  • Hero's Quest Series (even better than King's Quest)
NOTE: I've probably played 80% of all video games that don't fall in the "casual", "puzzle", "sports", "console fps", or "Nintendo 3DS/GameCube/Wii/WiiU" categories throughout all of time and space. There are plenty of other good games, but these stand out to me as my favorites.

Odd that no one mentioned Faxanadu? :)

Maybe the most frustrating game ever made?

Anything sandbox that lets me step off the rails and go do things. It took me forever to chew the fun out of Far Cry 3. Skyrim is still a ball (although I play it far less now than a few years back), as was Oblivion and Morrowind. Half Life, HL2 and so on will always have a place in my heart but the idea of getting on a one-way rail and ONLY going that way and NEVER altering my path except in slight variations of how I solve a given puzzle thanks to the presence of in-game physics is unappealing now in a modern game. Give me virtually endless hours of playability and a world to explore or don't bother me.
