Can someone explain the distinction between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal?
I noticed someone put some Zeppelin into their list. I would categorize them as the former. AC/DC too. Def Leppard, Deep Purple, etc.

It's generational, I think.
Scorpions, Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Randy-era Ozzy were metal back in the day, but even then, Anthrax fans disputed that claim. Today, guys who cut their teeth on modern death metal can't discern between Crazy Train and Justin Bieber, probably.

To me, it's like porn, in that " I know it when I see it" kinda way.

What we used to call heavy metal was a more diverse sound. By the very late '70s, the criteria for what would be considered metal began narrowing, and then the '80s continued that trend with vigor.
I used to lament the narrowing of the term to denote one particular sound, but I've come to appreciate that the term "hard rock" sets apart a more varied, interesting rock genre from what now is called metal.

I call it all "rock", sometimes with the descriptor "hard" or "light" or whatever.

Someone claims Ozzy and Judas Priest aren't metal?
All I know is that as a kid, Machine Head, Paranoid, and IV defined heavy metal. Later, Back in Black got added to the list. Then Puppets, Reign in Blood, and Appetite.
Maybe the new stuff is a different genre of music than the older stuff. But if it is, then that new stuff isn't heavy metal. Because Zeppelin, Deep Purple, AC/DC, etc. are most definitely heavy metal.
Hard rock is like the Stones, Steppenwolf, the Doors, Bob Segar...

I don't know if OCTOBER RUST, by Type O Negative, would be metal, but I love that one all the same.
It's there in my Top 100 for all time, but only during the month of October...

It may not be Zepplin or Slayer, but I would consider that metal, goth influences obvioulsly.

Yeah, I know. Serious, "LOL THOSE GUYS!" situation.

Not claiming it's universal, but it's out there.

Love Lovedrive, but Animal Magnetism will always be my go-to Scorps album.

Haven't even finished my first listen, but I'm inclined to add this to the list.

Great band. A lot like The Sword but not in a bad way.
