grodog the Persistent I, a level 0 Thief. Descended to level 4 of the dungeon and won 20 GP. Killed by spear trap on level 4! REST IN PEACE.
This may be as deep as I've gotten in the past?:
grodog the Uncapitalized III, a level 0 Dungeon Robber. Descended to level 7 of the dungeon and won 40 GP. On the return to the surface, killed by a Giant Toad on level 3! REST IN PEACE
grodog the Uncapitalized V, a level 0 Dungeon Robber. Descended to level 4 of the dungeon and won 30 GP. Killed by a Werewolf on level 4! REST IN PEACE
Alas Uncapitalized V had a ring of invisibility, so his prospects looked good...
...but apparently his successor was the true heir to the throne:
Congratulations to grodog the Uncapitalized VI! He ventured into the dungeon and returned rich! He is now a tavernkeeper. grodog the Uncapitalized VI played on Advanced difficulty. The story of grodog the Uncapitalized VI shall be recorded on the Adventurer's Monument to inspire further generations.
And his as well!:
Congratulations to grodog of the Slippery Eel! He ventured into the dungeon and returned rich! He is now a gentleman. grodog of the Slippery Eel played on Advanced difficulty. The story of grodog of the Slippery Eel shall be recorded on the Adventurer's Monument to inspire further generations.

After far to many deaths I managed to retire a lvl 4 thief and now have a rapier and leather armor available at the merchant. Meh, a small help but lvl 5 seems like it will take a huge amount of luck to reach.

Recommend you revert to Dungeon Robber class. Thief dies too easily.

I went back and forth on this. The thief is worthless in combat, but the sneak ability is good (especially if you can get a magic item that boosts it) because it lets you steal treasure. Always try to sneak, and carry lots of oil flasks - if your sneak attempt fails, run away and drop an oil flask to cover your retreat. You'll still get killed frustratingly often by traps and wandering monsters, but I think you're a little better off than a Dungeon Robber.

This is a time hole for sure, but fun anyway. One thing that's been bugging me - how do you eat food?

When you're in a dead-end passage (and possibly a room with no exits?) you're given the option to eat food.
