3 dead in 15minutes. Only 1 guy made it back to town. We didn't have a screen when I started with computers just a roll of yellow paper that printed out of something like a steno machine so a text based game is very nostalgic. I kept getting lost. I died from a pit-trap, a firebeatle (Ringo) and a kobold. One of my guys was dumped down to 3rd level as soon as he stepped in the dungeon.

Damn you for bringing this back up again, Allan!
I’m going to try to be very methodical, this time. Get a guy to Level 1, retire him. Get a guy to Level 2, retire him. Of course with lots of dead guys in-between.

Dungeon Robber is still awesome! It's fun the way the shape of the game changes as more options open up - how it goes from being a mostly-random attempt to just survive to feeling a lot more like actual D&D (when you're able to play fighters and clerics). When I was playing it obsessively back in 2015 I eventually figured out a bunch of successful strategies and exploitable loopholes (all of which I've now forgotten).

The only strategy I had that I recall is to stick with a “High Constitution” “Dungeon Robber” at first, at least until Fighter gets unlocked.

How, how, how did I miss this thread the first time around?
I go high dex, sneak past monsters with treasures, retreat until I'm relatively well equipped and/or not facing a monster on a level higher than my own.

Hm, didn’t realize you could get treasure from sneaking. I’ll have to try that.

As far as I can tell, it's only when you're in a room and there's both monster and treasure there. You can't get treasure from sneaking past a wandering monster.

It's the only way to have any chance of surviving as a thief. Sneaking and running.

Too fun. After answer the FIRST question, "will you enter the dungeon"
I press (e) of course, then immediately this happens:
10' spiked pit.
d6 saving throw: need 4+
Rolled 1! Failed!
10 damage!
You are killed!
You died!
