Hoisting a Blue Ruin for Vance. I envy you if you haven't had a chance to read much Vance, I wish I could read one of the bigger series for the first time again. My advice is to savor it if you give it a try. Thanks GG for turning so many onto Vance that maybe wouldn't have given it a shot otherwise, I know Gygax turned me on to Vance.

I am also raising a toast to Jack with a delicious Sam Adams Summer Ale.

Maybe we can all read (or re-read) the same books in time for NTX and we can have a sort of faux-pretentious “roundtable” on them.

I have read a few of Vance's short stories years ago: "Eight Phantasms" or something to that effect. I don't recall hardly any of it, but I did manage to dig it out of storage the other day, planned on reading it soon.

A sad day, but a full life.

Jack Vance's The Dying Earth holds a valued place on my bookshelf. What an amazing mastery of language.

Jack Vance's books are timeless and his legacy will live on. Undoubtedly, his books will be discovered by discerning readers for generations to come.

Yeah, man. I'd been looking out for it, and couldn't find it. Now, have it in electronic form, and will print it out this week and check it out. RIP.

Sad news when someone of such relevance passes. I was thinking the same as Terrex. We all have to go one day, but what a great thing it is to leave such a gift behind for present and future generations to discover, to give the gift of exploration, adventure, morality etc. to so many in the form of wonderfully written works of fiction. To inspire future writers even. And he seemed to live a long and happy life I assume with many loved ones at his side. It would be hard to ask for more. I raise my glass as he continues his journey across the veil to "the undiscovered Country, from whose bourn. No Traveller returns ". WS

I have only read the Dying Earth books and the Lyonesse trilogy from him, but still he is among the few writers I like to re-read. I have to look out for the rest of his life work.
