Gygaxian OSR
Which of the OSR products/modules out there (besides EXPR's OSRIC line and S&Ws) would you consider to be "Gygaxian" or something that would fit into early TSR? What other categories (besides Gygaxian) do you see comprising the OSR, and which published products fall into those categories? I'm interested more in flavor then compatibility (ie. a module can be written for 1E but feel nothing like traditional early TSR modules). Thanks

I hear Gygax was a big fan of Castles & Crusades. Maybe you should look into that.

What would fit in with early TSR stuff?
- Most stuff Matt Finch wrote (skip Goblin Fair though
)
- DF18 Where the Fallen Jarls Sleep
- The Black Monastery (though this is perhaps a little more slanted toward the Judges Guild feel than TSR)
- Cairn of the Skeleton King, Tower of Blood
- Where Dwells the Mountain God
- Some of Thorkhammer's giants modules

That was a "Matt's in a bipolar depression and not answering phone calls" editorial massacre designed to change the base manuscript into something that would sell to a 3e audience. Total disaster.Guy Fullerton wrote: (skip Goblin Fair though)

Re: Gygaxian OSR
Another one or two just jumped out at me. Or maybe this is just a tease, because I haven't seen all of these...
P&P's Shabbath and/or Yexx.
Shabbath's text is hard to find ... but you can find it if you dig hard enough. I've never found the map, though. The text is pretty damn classic TSR.
Yexx is more mysterious to me. I've only seen hints of its existence, and even those hints are just echoes of a previous reality. I assume it's pretty damn classic TSR, but I don't have a way to be sure.

My goodness, Guy, you gave me one hell of a scare. Palpitations and everything. I thought you'd found the full version of Shabbath somewhere horrendous like bittorrent. Or even worse, something that tells you what Yexx is.
But I think you've just found the archive of my old tripod site, haven't you? That's the non-infringing (or at least not-very-infringing), safe-to-show-the general public version of Shabbath, consisting of about 50 rooms in a dungeon that I uploaded for a few months in 2005 before thinking better of it and deleting it all off.
Thanks for the kind words about it, but Shabbath isn't really Gygaxian. Gary doesn't do all that business with the rosters and the random placement of monsters---he just lists critters in rooms and assumes the DM will move them around as necessary.

Even so, I'd love to see the map that went with it.
FYI, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine also has some the posts from the yexx.proboards39.com forum, such as the Shrine of the Oracle and Jermlaine Tunnels posts.

Golly gosh. There's a blast from the past! That's even got a version of Psyche's Tale on it.

Why was this shabbat/Yaxx module thing apparently expunged? It sounds like a deep, dark secret of some sort.

Why indeed. It does sound interesting...vargr1105 wrote:Why was this shabbat/Yaxx module thing apparently expunged? It sounds like a deep, dark secret of some sort.

Re: Gygaxian OSR
Guy is being too selfless. His F1 and F3 are excellent examples of 1e modules that have a certain nostalgic feel to them.
