JRT’s Thread

Post by Falconer »

Here’s a thread where you can engage JRT without derailing other topics.

Here’s a good one from Who were the WORST early TSR artists:
JRT wrote:I do agree that the worst [art] probably does come from the LBB. I haven't ever read them so I have no frame of reference, but those examples Trent showed us aren't that great...
JRT, man, that’s quite some flame bait after all the many, many times you’ve lectured us on how a true Gygax fan must appreciate ALL of Gygax’s works.

Dude, even I almost responded to that one. This guy is a total sycophant without an ounce of self-pride.

I wish they'd have had him put out some modules similar to those you see from the late 70s (or like those put out by EXPR for Semaj and Myth). Those would have been great. Instead we got unusable boring stuff. I'm sure he liked it, but what use was it to me or most weekend gamers (not needing or wanting something that big). Give me a 15 page module with underground rooms and hallways, with ruins above, maybe a forest with a dragon. Thats what Gygax fans were hungry for. He would have liked that too (he was capable of liking many things I think).
Gary primarily did what he wanted to, it wasn't a case of TLG paying him like a work-for-hire guy. Honestly, if Gary just wanted to get paid and was willing to do what people asked of him, he most likely would have accepted Peter Atkinson's offers to work at WoTC. Mostly, it was a case of EGG agreeing to do create stuff he wished to do, and the Troll's agreeing to publish it.
I suspect if the Trolls had wanted a 15-30 page module they could have gotten one. But who knows, maybe they tried and he said no.

JRT, yeah, okay maybe you know Gail, knew Gary etc. etc. but at this point you're only here to troll. That has to be it. Do you have a 'bot set up to crawl D&D websites looking for GYGAX so you can come in with your holy utterances?

Dig this: this is an OD&D/AD&D fansite. Just like you're not gonna get much traction talking about The Honeydrippers or The Firm on a forum dedicated solely to Led Zeppelin's oeuvre while at Atlantic Records, riding in on your high horse (straight up the gates to your white tower) and talking down to us about All Things Gygax and how we're not true fans doesn't put us in awe of you, it makes you look like a schmuck.

Which, given your lol haven't read od&d lol shtick is maybe exactly what you wanted in the first place.

So let's see if we've got the disconnect here isolated: you don't play RPGs, you just read them. We're Doing It Wrong when it comes to liking D&D because we don't like all of Gary's work (which, I guess, includes the regrettable Cyborg Commando?)...but you've never even seen original D&D.

Dude you're not an authority on Gary Gygax any more than an ipad owning, turtleneck-wearing latte drinker with an account on Pitchfork is a Zeppelin authority.

Please, go back wherever you came from - every time someone says "Gary Gygax" IT ISN'T ABOUT YOU!.

Falconer, I simply felt no need to read OD&D because I thought AD&D was the better work. If you think me saying that is deliberate Troll Bait, then you're mistaken. I'm sure since the board also focuses on AD&D there's a few people here who read that and never read OD&D.

DD--well, all I can say is that you're entitled to your opinion. I will say that not being liked doesn't mean it's not the truth, and if people think I come in to "boast" or something, they are mistaken. I'm not going to be bullied into leaving--and I am surprised the forum has started allowing personal attacks. So I'll just leave this as my response, and ignore the rest of the thread.

The thing to remember about Gary Gygax is he was more inclusive rather than exclusive. He did not call people who liked newer versions of D&D "3tards" or "4ons" or whatever. He may have been critical of things that came later, but he stopped short of making fun of the people who liked that stuff--it's a subtle difference but it is a difference. People should never confuse the OSR or Old School D&D with Gary's personal preferences. People who do are turning EGG into some quasi-pseudo "gamer Jesus", and I think that's wrong.

HOW THE FUCK WOULD YOU KNOW?

If you've never seen it, how the fuck would you know, John? How? Please, enlighten us to how you divined that. I don't like 2e, 3e or 4e but I sure as hell have at least read the damn books, so unlike you, I at least speak from a position of knowing.

JRT, what annoys people is your toxic tongue, and your attitude of knowing more about a game then those that play it (and in the case of some of the guys here, who actually study it, reading the 0E is a good first step). I don't read any other gaming forums then here (just no time) but you do come off as caustic and know-it-allsy (maybe thats how the other sites are now?). People that really know alot (at least in RL) tend to be more modest. Those that want to appear smart, clever and informed, but are not, tend to come off as haughty. Most people over the age of 10 realize this. So...keep that in mind.

I had no idea there were six Trancers movies.

The mind boggles.

Yeah, but they don’t lecture us on how we can’t claim to be Gygax fans unless we love everything he wrote, including LA, Yggsburgh, etc. I mean, that has been your shtick for as long as I’ve known you. So it’s kind of ironic that you seem to be the only person in the world who has read every Gygax work except the one called DUNGEONS & DRAGONS.
